A Star Line Up

To me, flowers can be part of a feminine card, as stars can be part of a masculine card. Here I used a Spellbinder die to cut out the entire card base, making sure not to cut the entire fold in the cardstock.I was pleased to find that the Close to My Heart set of stamps coordinated perfectly with the Spellbinder dies.

Take a Bite Out of It!

Two different sizes of the Spellbinders Circle dies allowed me to cut out this stamped image and then frame it within a circle cut out of a piece of patterned paper. Go through your stamp images to find a perfect fit for your Spellbinder dies.

Piece by Piece

Here is another card design that I transformed through the use of masculine patterned paper to a card more appropriate for a guy. Just a little leftover patterned paper was required to make a fabulous card. The curved rectangles were cut using the inside pieces of the Sizzix Bookplates die.

Clearly Framed

As soon as I saw this design on another card, I had to make my own version of it. By using the Papertrey Ink frame stamp, I was able to put the focus on my focal point while pulling the elements of the card together. Inking the edges of the square also made it look more "finished".

Embossed Borders

Along with A2 sized embossing folders, Cuttlebug sells smaller ones which can be used to make borders. Here I have used part of one, as a switch from a ribbon border. I like how it adds dimension to the card. No reason why this couldn't be taken one step further and highlighted with a sweep of ink.

Appropriate Border Punches

Though there are many wonderful border punches on the market, I found this one a good choice for a man's card. Border punch designs with "holes" in them tend to look somewhat"lacey" and more feminine. Furthermore, I prefer to use a border punch without spaces in it when it layers on top of a patterned paper. When small parts of a patterned paper peek through those holes, it can look awkward.

Mainly Masculine

The next series of cards were made with SEI's Grandpa's Attic patterned paper collection. I hope that both the card patterns and the paper patterns give you ideas to create those more difficult masculine cards.

Paper Embellishments

I needed something to balance the sentiment in the bottom right hand corner and couldn't find anything in the appropriate size and colour in my stash of embellishments. With the last scrap of matching brown cardstock I was able to make this die cut shape with one of the dies in the Fleur de Lis Spellbinder Pendant set. To dress it up a little, I sprayed the die cut with Glimmer Mist.

Complete the Square

I have made a 5 X 5 card with blocks before, but this time I took it up a notch by die cutting the squares with a Spellbinders die. I also used a scalloped circle die to make the flower.

Scrap Stacks

This is another idea I found on another cardmaker's blog. It's also a wonderful way to use up small pieces of leftover patterned papers. It's simple, but sophisticated.

Lovely Layers

Many blogs are showing cards made with strips of patterned papers. What a great way to use up scraps. Papers from the same collections make this easy to do. I like to have a solid background for borders punched with empty space.

A "Do Over"

To give "life" to this sunflower, I sprayed the card parts with Glimmer Mist. Firstly, I sprayed the flower parts with one colour of Glimmer Mist and then sprayed the assembled card with a brown coloured mist to "antique" it. It still looked like something was missing. When I found the card that inspired me to purchase this die, I realized where I went wrong.

"Iris" You Well

For something different, I wrapped the die cut with a ribbon, rather than putting the ribbon around one of the card layers. This somewhat emphasizes how the scalloped die cut frames the stamped image.

Special Sentiments

Instead of an image, I like to use sentiments as the focal point of a card. Rather than merely centre the die cut in the middle of the card, I created interest by adding a cardstock bar and two brads (rule of 3).

Colour Coordination

I emphasized the rustic pattern in the paper by distressing the edges. The "fancy" patterned paper supported the medium sized, simple image. Products of the same colour pink pull everything together.

Motherly Love

This unique card would be appropriate for a "not first time" mom. Though the patterned paper is from a collection of an animal theme, it matched perfectly to the water coloured image. Don't limit the theme of the paper collection to its uses.
